Vodafone Launches New Encryption Call App

Vodafone Germany will attempt to simplify encrypting mobile phone calls with its upcoming Secure Call app, which it plans to launch for Android, iOS and Windows Phone devices.
It developed the app in partnership with Secusmart, and unveiled it at the Cebit trade show where all kinds of encrypted communications will be a hot topic, driven by the continued revelations from former U.S. government contractor Edward Snowden about National Security Agency (NSA) snooping.
Secusmart's profile has been raised considerably since German Chancellor Angela Merkel started using the company's SecuSuite for BlackBerry 10 to protect her communications.
The new Secure Call app offers businesses and individuals the same level of voice communication encryption that Merkel has, but on a platform-independent basis, according to Vodafone. The app will first become available for Android-based smartphones, and later for iOS and Windows Phone, according to Alexander Leinhos , head of external communications at Vodafone Germany.
It will be launched towards the end of the year, and cost about €10 (US$14) per month, per user.
For now, there are no plans to make Secure Call available outside of Germany, but the app would be attractive to users in other countries as well and exporting it wouldn't be too difficult, Leinhos said.
At Cebit, Vodafone also launched an expanded version of its Secure SIM service.

Secure SIM Data lets enterprises and authorities sign and encrypt e-mails, documents and VPN connections. It also encrypts storage devices such as USB sticks and external hard disks, and can be used on Windows 8-based ThinkPad notebooks and tablets from Lenovo, Vodafone said.
Users don't need a separate smartcard or token because the private key and certificates are securely stored on the SIM card, according to Vodafone, which developed the service with Giesecke & Devrient. For example, to encrypt a Word document, the user enters a pin code.
Secure SIM data adds to the existing Secure SIM Login product for two-factor authentication to access corporate networks and hosted services

LG Future Smartphones

About one month ago, it was announced by LG that the company was going to be releasing bunch of mid-range smartphones, but at the time none of them were expected to arrive in the United States.
It looks like that is about to change if a recent tweet has any truth to it.  A Twitter user, which is very well known for releasing information proven to be correct before it is officially announced, noted that that LG L90 was going to be released on the T-Mobile network.  The LG L90 is part of the L Series III smartphones from LG.
A new image was leaked along with the tweet and the image clearly shows the T-Mobile branding on the lower back side where it is typically found on official T-Mobile smartphones.  The L90 that is shown in the image looks just like the ones that have been released internationally with rounded corners, back and menu keys and a physical home button.
Of the Series III smartphones, the L90 is on the higher end model.  It comes with a nice 4.7-inch touch screen display and 960×540 resolution.  The phone is powered by a quad-core, 1.2GHz processor and 1GB of RAM.
Along with the T-Mobile branding on the back side, users will find an 8MP camera that can also record video in HD.  The front side sports a 1.3MP webcam that will work nicely for video chatting and more.
The L90 can also be accessorized with a Quick Window smart cover, allowing users to see a bit of information like the time and notifications without having to open the cover.  The phone is not going to break any records in the hardware department, but if you are looking for a mid-range phone to upgrade to, the LG L90 might fit right into your options.
Other than the 4.7-inch display, the phone is going to come with Android 4.4 KitKat software pre-installed, so that is a very nice surprise.  When Google announced the latest software, it did note that it was going to be optimized for all smartphones, even ones that are not as well off in the hardware department.
This allows for users with entry and mid-range devices to experience the latest from Android.  T-Mobile has not announced the phone yet, so it might be a couple weeks before any official information is released.

New Smartphone Future Processors

After Apple surprised us all with its new 64-bit processor alongside its A7 chip, many companies decided to follow suit and make this kind of smartphone. Intel started working on new dual-core Atom processor chip that goes by the codename “Merrifield”. Several months were spent for its careful preparation. According to the official statement, this chip will be included in handsets released during the Q2. However, not many smartphone manufacturers will use these Intel processor chips and the real question is whether these manufacturers are ready to sell Intel-based smartphones or not. Ready or not, these manufacturers are obligated to produce 64-bit smartphones because Intel has recently signed product deals with Foxconn, Lenovo and Asus.
Qualcomm is close to compete with Apple after the company has launched Snapdragon 8-core 615 and Snapdragon quad-core 610 processor chips. These processors will be featured in devices released during the fourth quarter in 2014. According to the official statement, these new Snapdragon chips have the same power as Apple’s 64-bit processor chips. Their CPUs are based on ARMv8 64-bit architecture. The newest Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core chip could come out as an overkill for some handsets.

MediaTek, the lower-power handset chipset manufacturer, has announced its version of the 64-bit chip. This chip will be ready to take place in high-end smartphones with an affordable price. MediaTek’s processor chip will be ready to support some of the most-required features such as high-end camera, LTE and great video capabilities. This processor chip will be available in Q3. So far, this company hasn’t revealed the smartphone companies that will use this chip.
The biggest disappointment at this year’s Mobile World Congress was Samsung. It released its high-end Galaxy S5 smartphone that looks like something that we’ve already seen. This new smartphone needed to be the answer to Apple’s iPhone 5S, but it will come out with Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 octa-core chip – Exynos 5 Octa. This processor has Cortex-A15 chip. According to some smartphone analysts, the Galaxy S5 won’t be that close to iPhone 5S even though everybody thought it will be.
Nvidia’s first ARM based 64-bit processor called Tegra K1 will be ready to be placed in smartphones in Q3 this year.
The last thing smartphone manufacturers want to do is lag while Apple’s pushing forward. They must follow the fast pace of the industry and update their processor as soon as they can. If not, Apple will continue to push forward and distance itself from the competition.
